Caught in the act
Corrie’s fading glamourpuss Rita Sullivan (she of the orange bouffant and jazzy sweaters) is set to fall out with her best friend Emily Bishop after saucy photos – taken by Emily’s late husband Ernest – come to light. The trouble starts when nosy Norris Cole finds the photos in his landlady Emily’s bedroom drawer and can’t resist putting the cat among the pigeons.
Much-married newsagent Rita is mortified the pictures – snapped during her sexy heyday as a cabaret singer – have emerged. She’s determined to explain to her friend exactly how Ernest came to take them – and is shocked to discover that Emily knew about them all along.
“It never seemed the right moment to ask you about them, and I could never bring myself to throw them away,” Emily tells her. “I suppose I thought if I left them in my bedroom then, after I died, they would eventually get to you.”
After allaying Emily’s fears that she had an affair with Ernest, who was gunned down by a robber in a bungled wages heist in 1976, Rita responds: “The pictures were all my fault. I asked him to take them.” Hmm… that’s what they all say.
